Sadio Mane’s Injury-Time Strike Secures Senegal’s Afcon 2025 Qualification

Senegal’s Sadio Mane scored a dramatic injury-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over Malawi, ensuring the Teranga Lions’ place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Mane, now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, found the net in the 96th minute to send Senegal to the finals in Morocco alongside Burkina Faso. The 2021 Afcon champions have qualified despite the recent departure of long-time coach Aliou Cisse.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Ivory Coast suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Sierra Leone, while Ghana is on the brink of elimination following a 2-0 loss to Sudan. Ghana, third in Group F with only two points from four matches, now faces an uphill battle, needing to win their remaining games and hope for a Sudan collapse.

Other Afcon Qualifiers

Egypt, DR Congo, and Angola also secured their spots with two rounds remaining. Egypt, playing without captain Mohamed Salah, triumphed 1-0 over Mauritania. DR Congo continued their dominant form in Group H, defeating Tanzania 2-0, while Angola maintained their perfect record with a 1-0 win over Niger.

The final two qualifying rounds will take place next month, with the tournament set to begin on December 21, 2025. So far, the qualified teams include Morocco (hosts), Senegal, Egypt, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Angola, Cameroon, and Algeria.
