Ryan Garcia Overweight for Haney Bout, Fight Proceeds with Restrictions

American boxer Ryan Garcia has weighed in 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit for his upcoming light-welterweight bout against compatriot Devin Haney in Brooklyn, New York. Despite Garcia’s weight issue, the fight at the Barclays Center will still take place, with Garcia’s team agreeing to compensate world champion Haney for the discrepancy.

However, due to Garcia’s failure to make weight, he will not be eligible to win Haney’s WBC title in the bout.

Garcia’s behavior leading up to the fight has drawn criticism, particularly for his erratic and often controversial social media posts in recent months. During the news conference on Thursday, Garcia engaged in a foul-mouthed tirade directed at Haney and a member of the audience.

At the news conference, Haney demanded $500,000 in compensation for every pound that Garcia weighed over the limit. Despite Garcia’s team advising him against accepting the deal, Garcia ultimately shook hands with Haney, agreeing to the terms.

Haney confirmed on social media that Garcia had honored the agreement to pay $500,000 per pound over the limit.

Devin Haney, a two-weight world champion with a perfect record of 31 wins in 31 professional bouts, is widely regarded as one of boxing’s top pound-for-pound fighters.

In contrast, Ryan Garcia has accumulated 24 wins with one defeat, which came via a stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis in April 2023.
