Ronaldo Criticizes Manchester United’s Ten Hag, Calls for Club Overhaul

Cristiano Ronaldo has voiced his concerns over Manchester United’s current state under manager Erik ten Hag, calling for a complete rebuild of the club to compete at the highest levels once again. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ronaldo questioned Ten Hag’s mentality, particularly criticizing the manager’s apparent lack of ambition.

“The coach says they cannot compete to win the [Premier] League and Champions League,” Ronaldo said, referencing Ten Hag’s comments. “As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. You have to try.”

Ronaldo, who spent two spells at United and won numerous titles, stressed the importance of aiming high, even if the potential isn’t there, urging the club to rediscover its winning mentality. He fondly remembered his time at United but emphasized the need for fundamental changes since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

“They need to rebuild everything,” he stated, highlighting the lack of evolution at the club. Despite Manchester United’s long-standing prestige, Ronaldo believes the club has failed to adapt and needs time and proper investment to restore its glory.

The Portuguese star did express optimism about the recent changes, particularly the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Ten Hag’s staff, saying that listening to former players like Van Nistelrooy could benefit the club.

Ronaldo left United for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in 2022 following a tumultuous second stint at Old Trafford. Despite the club’s ongoing struggles, he expressed hope that the future could be bright, provided United rebuilds from the ground up.
