Roma Sack Manager Daniele De Rossi Four Matches Into Serie A Season

Roma have parted ways with manager Daniele de Rossi just four matches into the new Serie A season. De Rossi, who replaced José Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico in January, has failed to secure a victory this season, with Roma drawing three and suffering a home defeat to Empoli. The club currently sits 16th in the Serie A standings after a 1-1 draw against Genoa on Sunday.

In a statement, Roma said: “The club’s decision is taken in the interest of the team, to be able to promptly resume the desired path at a time when the season is still at its beginning.” They thanked De Rossi for his efforts, acknowledging his passion and dedication.

De Rossi’s tenure started promisingly, losing only once in his first 11 league matches and collecting 26 points from a possible 33. Roma rose from ninth to fifth during that period and reached the Europa League semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Bayer Leverkusen. Last season, Roma finished sixth in Serie A, securing Europa League qualification once again.

Despite signing top scorer Artem Dovbyk from Girona and veteran defender Mats Hummels, Roma struggled this season. Notable departures included Chris Smalling to Saudi Arabia, Tammy Abraham on loan to AC Milan, and Romelu Lukaku to Napoli.

De Rossi, a Roma legend with 616 appearances and a World Cup title with Italy in 2006, was seen as a potential long-term figure at the club. However, the Friedkin Group, owners of a majority stake in Roma, decided to act swiftly in hopes of salvaging the season.
