In anticipation of the nationwide hunger protest, the Rivers State Police Command has assured its readiness to manage any arising situations. Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, confirmed that the command has strengthened its force by recalling officers from essential duties to bolster their presence.
Addressing reporters in Port Harcourt, Disu expressed that the planned protest is a significant concern, not just for the command but for many Nigerians. He emphasized the proactive measures being taken, including continuous meetings with key community stakeholders to maintain peace in the state.
“That is of concern to us. It is information that is everywhere for everybody to see. We have been having meetings with a lot of our stakeholders, very important stakeholders in the communities,” Disu stated.
Further meetings are scheduled for the upcoming days to ensure a coordinated approach. Disu highlighted that the police force aims to avoid a confrontational stance, focusing instead on collaboration and understanding with the community.
“Our men are prepared. We have talked to them. Most importantly, we don’t want it to be a situation of we versus them. We are all in this together,” Disu added.
The commissioner assured that the officers have been retrained and briefed on handling potential scenarios, reinforcing the command’s commitment to safeguarding the state’s peace and security.
