Rivers Governor Fubara Approves N85,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved an increase in the minimum wage for civil servants to N85,000, surpassing the national minimum rate. The decision, aimed at alleviating economic challenges, was made during a closed-door meeting with the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, confirmed the approval after the meeting, stating that payments will begin in November 2024. “This is a significant development for civil servants in Rivers State, who have never had it this good since the state’s inception,” Nwaeke said.

He also announced that a technical committee has been formed to address the payment of arrears, with a plan to be outlined soon.

Comrade Emecheta Chuku, Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, praised the governor’s decision as a reflection of his commitment to workers’ welfare. Rivers NLC Chairman, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, noted that the new wage places Rivers among the leading states in Nigeria, alongside Lagos.

The labour leaders pledged to communicate the governor’s decision to the workers and reaffirmed their support for his administration.
