Hallgrimsson, tasked with reviving a struggling squad, watched as his side failed to capitalize on early opportunities. Sammie Szmodics’ shot was denied by Jordan Pickford, and moments later, England’s counterattack led to Rice scoring the opener. Grealish added a second shortly after, effectively sealing the game by the 26th minute.
Hallgrimsson, frustrated by his team’s defensive lapses, noted that such mistakes “should never happen at any level of football.” While defeat to England was expected, the real challenge for Ireland lies in their upcoming clash against Greece. Hallgrimsson must now focus on delivering crucial wins to avoid slipping further in the standings.
