Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmad Gumi, has strongly criticized the recent release of a list containing alleged terrorist financiers by the Nigerian government. The list, unveiled by The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) on Tuesday, purportedly identifies 15 entities accused of funding terrorist activities within the country.
According to reports, the prominent figure topping the list is Tukur Mamu, an ally of Sheik Gumi and a Kaduna-based publisher. Mamu is currently facing legal proceedings initiated by the Federal Government over allegations of aiding the perpetrators of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack in March 2022.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Media Aide, Bashir Ahmad, shared the list in a statement on Monday, expressing the government’s expectation for the implicated individuals to face legal repercussions for their alleged involvement.
The individuals named in the list include Tukur Mamu, Yusuf Ghazali, Muhammad Sani, Abubakar Muhammad, Sallamudeen Hassan, Adamu Ishak, Hassana-Oyiza Isah, Abdulkareem Musa, and Umar Abdullahi. Additionally, six Bureau De Change (BDCs) and firms were also listed, namely West and East Africa General Trading Company Limited, Settings Bureau De Change Ltd, G. Side General Enterprises, Desert Exchange Ventures Limited, Eagle Square General Trading Company Limited, and Alfa Exchange BDC.
Reacting to the release of the list during an event organized by Daily Trust, Sheik Ahmad Gumi voiced his discontent, emphasizing that Mamu’s case is currently undergoing legal proceedings and should not be subjected to what he described as a “media trial.” Gumi stressed the importance of allowing the court to determine Mamu’s culpability, highlighting the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Asserting the authority of the judiciary, Gumi questioned the legitimacy of security agencies declaring individuals as terrorist financiers without due process. He urged for transparency and adherence to legal procedures, advocating for Mamu’s right to a fair trial and emphasizing the need for concrete evidence to substantiate allegations.
Addressing Mamu’s character and the circumstances surrounding his arrest, Gumi portrayed him as a figure entangled in a misunderstanding with a committee tasked with handling the release of certain victims. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Gumi expressed hope for a just outcome from the court, emphasizing the importance of factual evidence in determining Mamu’s fate.
