Social media influencer Reno Omokri has voiced admiration for former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s decision to hand over power to incumbent Governor Usman Ododo. Speaking on the ‘Mic On Podcast’ programme hosted by Channels Television’s journalist, Seun Okinbaloye, Omokri emphasized the importance of a governor appointing a loyal successor. He stated, “There’s another aspect of it that people need to look at, that’s loyalty.” Omokri further elaborated, “If you have a successor who can’t become your protector, then that’s a disaster.”
Omokri’s praise for Bello’s ability to maintain loyalty in his successor comes amidst controversy surrounding Bello’s alleged involvement in financial crimes. Despite the allegations, Omokri highlighted Bello’s decision to appoint a successor who has stood by him. However, Omokri urged Bello to cooperate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stating, “Look, Yahaya Bello, enough is enough. Surrender yourself to the EFCC.”
The former governor’s troubles with the EFCC stem from allegations of misappropriating funds amounting to N84 billion from the state’s coffers. Despite obtaining an arrest warrant, Bello remains at large, with Governor Ododo allegedly aiding his escape from EFCC operatives.
Criticism has been directed at the EFCC’s handling of Bello’s case, with over 120 civil society organizations condemning what they perceive as anti-democratic actions and unjust application of state power by the Federal Government.
While Omokri acknowledged the legitimacy of the EFCC’s actions against Bello if warranted, he also expressed disappointment in Bello’s performance as governor. Omokri highlighted Bello’s appointment as governor following the death of Abubakar Audu and criticized his representation of the youth.
