Rema Claims His Hit ‘Calm Down’ Led to Afrobeats Recognition at Major Awards

Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has credited the success of his hit song *Calm Down* for the recent inclusion of Afrobeats categories in international awards. During an appearance on *The Breakfast Club*, Rema expressed his belief that he stands alongside Afrobeats giants Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

“I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself,” Rema remarked. “Respect to the OGs but yeah, I am one of the Big 4.”

He further added that his song’s global success has opened doors for Afrobeats, stating, “Something as little as a major award shows creating an Afrobeats category because the success of my song has already opened gates.”

Rema’s claim comes after the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a Best Afrobeats Song category last year, with his *Calm Down Remix* featuring Selena Gomez winning the inaugural award.
