Rejected for Her Roots: Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina Reveals South Africa’s Cold Shoulder

Newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Vannesa Adetshina, has recently opened up about a distressing experience in South Africa. Adetshina, who has lived in the country for 23 years, was forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa pageant amid controversy over her nationality and accusations against her mother by South Africa’s Home Affairs department.

In an emotional interview, Adetshina expressed the pain of being rejected by the South African community due to her name. “South Africans felt like I was not South African enough because of my name, and it was really hard to see,” she shared. The beauty queen described the experience as “horrible,” adding, “It is heartbreaking to see that I was not welcomed and accepted.”

Adetshina’s ordeal highlights the challenges of identity and belonging in a country she has called home for most of her life.
