The Recording Academy has reportedly reclassified South African singer Tyla’s debut album, initially submitted for the Best R&B Album category, into the pop Grammys category. According to Hollywood Reporters, the academy’s R&B screening committee made the decision to move the self-titled project into contention for Best Pop Vocal Album.
If Tyla secures a nomination, she would make history as the first African artist to compete in the pop category at the Grammys.
Her debut album will face fierce competition from some of the industry’s biggest names, including Taylor Swift’s *The Tortured Poets Department*, Ariana Grande’s *Eternal Sunshine*, Billie Eilish’s *Hit Me Hard and Soft*, Chappell Roan’s *The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess*, and Sabrina Carpenter’s *Short N’ Sweet*.
Reacting to the news, Tyla expressed her excitement on X, writing, “I make it all.”
Earlier this year, Tyla won her first Grammy in the newly created category for Best African Music Performance with her hit song *Water*.
