Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Lille after suffering a hip injury during the team’s 1-1 La Liga draw with Atletico Madrid. The club confirmed that Courtois sustained an abductor injury in his left leg during the match.
Andriy Lunin, Ukraine’s international goalkeeper, is expected to step in for Courtois. Meanwhile, Real Madrid received a boost with the return of striker Kylian Mbappé, who missed Sunday’s game due to a thigh injury.
The Spanish and European champions will also face Villarreal on Saturday before heading into the international break. Courtois, who missed most of last season due to a knee injury, has been a regular starter for Real Madrid, playing in all 10 matches this season.
Sunday’s match against Atletico was also disrupted by crowd issues, with a 20-minute halt in play after Courtois alerted officials to objects being thrown from the stands by home supporters.
