Rangers Draw Arsenal in Women’s Champions League Qualifier

Rangers will face Arsenal in their initial match as they aim to qualify for the group stage of next season’s Women’s Champions League. This one-off tie presents a challenging start for the Scottish side.

The victor of this match will proceed to play either Spanish club Atletico Madrid or Norwegian side Rosenborg BK in the subsequent round of qualification.

In a parallel competition path, SWPL champions Celtic will play Finnish team KuPS in their ‘champions path’ semi-final. Should they win, they will face the winner of the FC Gintra v Agarista match to advance further.

The semi-finals are scheduled for 4 September, with the finals occurring three days later. All matches in this round will be held at a single venue per group.

Manchester City, last season’s runners-up in the Women’s Super League (WSL), will join the qualification process in round two, while WSL champions Chelsea have a direct entry into the group stage.

Arsenal, who secured third place in the WSL last season, feature in the ‘league path’ along with Rangers. This will mark Rangers’ second foray into European competition, following their 2022-23 qualifying round exit to Benfica.

Round one is divided into two sections: the ‘champions path’, with 11 groups including Celtic, and the ‘league path’, with four groups, including Arsenal and Rangers. This stage is a mini-tournament leading to round two, where more prominent teams join the competition.

Arsenal previously faced Scottish opposition in the Women’s Champions League in 2013, defeating Glasgow City 6-2 on aggregate. Glasgow City also has past experience with English teams, having lost 4-0 on aggregate to Chelsea in 2015.
