Rahm Refuses to Pay DP World Tour Fines, Putting Ryder Cup Spot in Jeopardy

Jon Rahm has made it clear that he has no plans to pay his outstanding DP World Tour fines, which could jeopardize his eligibility for the 2025 Ryder Cup in New York. The Spanish golfer, who was instrumental in Europe reclaiming the trophy last year, faces fines for playing in LIV Golf tournaments without seeking permission from the DP World Tour.

Rahm, who needs to play in three more DP World Tour events by November to retain his membership, entered the Spanish Open, Dunhill Links Championship, and Andalucia Masters. However, the DP World Tour has stated he remains ineligible to compete until his fines are paid.

“I’m not a big fan of the fines,” Rahm said at LIV Chicago. “I don’t intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them… I intend to play in Spain. Whether they let me play or not is a different thing.”

European players are required to compete in four DP World Tour events annually to maintain their membership, and Rahm’s Olympic participation counted as one. With limited remaining opportunities, he faces a race against time to secure his spot for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage.

Rahm’s situation mirrors that of Tyrrell Hatton, his teammate, who also joined LIV but was allowed to compete after appealing his fines.

Former European captain Padraig Harrington stressed the importance of adhering to the rules, stating, “The Ryder Cup is bigger than just the match. It is the backbone of the European Tour.”

Rahm’s Ryder Cup future remains uncertain as the DP World Tour insists that fines must be paid, with captain Luke Donald affirming, “Jon absolutely knows what is required.”
