In a notable development following Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, President Bola Tinubu has elevated the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to the nation’s second highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). This upgrade comes after a debate in the House of Representatives, where members called for the Speaker to receive a higher honour than the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), which was initially conferred upon him.
The special adviser to the president, Bayo Onanuga, explained in a statement that Tinubu was persuaded by the House’s position, deciding to “remedy the historical error and oversight” by upgrading Abbas’ honour. The Senate President, other principal officers of the National Assembly, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria are also expected to be formally decorated with their new honours soon.
