Postecoglou Confident After Spurs’ North London Derby Loss: “I Always Win Things in My Second Year”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou remained optimistic about his team’s future despite their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby. Gabriel’s header from a corner secured the win for the Gunners, pushing them into second place, while Spurs have managed just one victory in their four Premier League matches this season.

Postecoglou, who led Spurs to a fifth-place finish in his debut season, reflected on his earlier claim that he tends to achieve success in his second year at a club. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Australian clarified, “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

The 59-year-old, known for his successful track record, has a history of winning titles in his second seasons with clubs like South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, and Yokohama F. Marinos, as well as achieving back-to-back Scottish championships with Celtic. His international success includes leading Australia to the Asian Cup after two years in charge.

Despite the current defensive and finishing struggles at Spurs, Postecoglou remains confident the team can challenge for silverware, with their last trophy being the 2008 League Cup. Former England defender Matt Upson, commenting for BBC Radio 5 Live, noted Tottenham’s vulnerabilities, stating, “They are not being clinical enough… The pressure is going to start to build on the manager.”
