The Police Service Commission (PSC) has refuted claims by lawyer Silas Onu and Shield Sword and Consult Legal Practitioners regarding the absence of board members in the commission’s operations. According to PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, the planned lawsuit against PSC Chairman Solomon Arase is deemed an unnecessary distraction, as the commission’s affairs have been managed lawfully by the chairman and the sole remaining board member, Onyemuche Nnamani.
Ani cited Section 2(1) of the Police Service Commission (Establishment) Act 2001, which allows the commission to function without a full board and make standing orders or hold proceedings. He emphasized that the commission’s management has operated credibly, pointing out past instances where the commission functioned without a complete board.
The PSC also alleged that media campaigns against the commission were instigated by recently retired Deputy Inspectors General of Police who resisted their retirement. Ani clarified that previous instances of the commission operating without a full board, such as during the tenure of late Permanent Secretary Garuba Buwai, were managed effectively by the law.
Ani affirmed that Chairman Arase, a constitutional lawyer, has adhered to legal provisions and provided anticipatory approvals to recommendations, which would be ratified when a full board is constituted by the President. He highlighted the commission’s effective management and cooperation with stakeholders in the police sector.
