The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the reported invasion of off-campus hostels belonging to Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (formerly known as Kano State University of Science and Technology) in the Wudil area of the state.
Abdullahi Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the command, confirmed the commencement of the investigation in an exclusive telephone interview with PUNCH Metro on Monday. The incident, brought to light by an individual identified as @Smashingdollar3 on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), detailed how suspected thieves initially invaded the area but were met with resistance from students who chased them away.
However, upon the student’s return to the hostel, another group of hoodlums allegedly accosted them, wielding machetes and accusing them of failing to participate in the pursuit of the earlier invaders. Despite police intervention, the hoodlums continued their harassment, disregarding the presence of law enforcement.
Videos of the incident circulating online depict damaged hostel windows and frames, indicating the severity of the altercation.
Kiyawa clarified that while no casualties were reported, the incident was under investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects responsible for the invasion. He emphasized that the event was not a targeted attack but rather an invasion by suspected hoodlums, with some students alleging theft of their belongings.
The incident adds to the growing concerns over the safety of schools and students nationwide, amidst a backdrop of increasing attacks on educational institutions and students. Recent incidents, including robberies, kidnappings, and assaults, have underscored the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard educational facilities and the lives of students across the country.
