Soldiers in Plateau State arrested 25 individuals on Wednesday for violating a curfew imposed on the state capital by the state government. This brings the total number of arrests to 51 since the curfew was enacted in Jos on Sunday to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
Plateau Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday. He praised the youths for largely complying with the curfew but expressed disappointment at some who disregarded the directives and attacked armed policemen at Yen Tire market and other parts of Jos North LGA.
“The Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Adesina, expresses disappointment at the way certain youths flagrantly disregarded government directives by coming out of their residences to attack armed policemen,” Alfred stated.
The police spokesman noted that the commissioner, alongside heads of other security agencies, conducted an on-the-spot assessment and surveillance patrol of the state capital to ensure compliance with the curfew. During the patrol, 26 suspects were arrested for non-compliance and attempting to loot shops.
“Additionally, on 07/08/2024, 25 suspects were arrested by the STF operatives for similar crimes and handed over to the Plateau State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,” the statement added.
The suspects have been investigated and charged to court accordingly. The Plateau Police Chief also issued a stern warning against brandishing foreign flags, emphasizing that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and such acts would be treated as treason.
The Plateau State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property and will not tolerate any form of looting, vandalism, or acts that could disrupt peace in the state. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the police.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang relaxed the 24-hour curfew earlier imposed on Jos, allowing residents to move freely between 2 pm and 6 pm daily until further notice. He urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities for prompt action.
