Peter Obi Urges INEC and Security Agencies to Ensure Credible Edo Election

BENIN CITY – Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure that the upcoming Edo governorship election on Sept. 21 is conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner.

Obi made this statement during the grand finale rally for the LP’s governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, held on Wednesday in Benin City. Addressing the crowd, Obi emphasized that Edo State residents would not tolerate any attempts by political parties to manipulate the election process.

He expressed confidence that the Labour Party would bring about the change needed in the state, promising that if elected, Akpata would focus on fixing federal roads connected to the state without waiting for federal intervention. Obi also criticized state governors for often deferring critical responsibilities to the federal government at the expense of their citizens.

“I call on the people of Edo to turn out in large numbers on Sept. 21 to vote for Olumide Akpata and his running mate, Yusuf Kadiri,” Obi urged.

Prof. Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, also spoke at the rally. He encouraged LP supporters to use their numerical strength to secure victory for Akpata, urging them to “vote and defend their votes,” reinforcing that power ultimately belongs to the people.

Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, echoed this sentiment, urging supporters to build on past successes and replicate them during the upcoming election.

Akpata, the LP governorship candidate, also addressed the crowd, urging voters to use their ballots to remove the People’s Democratic Party from the Edo government house.
