Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has issued a call to action, urging the Federal Government to tackle the recurring issue of national grid collapses by instituting a technical task force comprised of seasoned professionals.
In a statement relayed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi’s spokesperson, the former presidential hopeful emphasized the necessity of assembling a team of experts devoid of political affiliations to assess the root causes of the grid crisis and propose effective solutions.
“I suggest that the federal government immediately constitute a technical task force of real professionals without political consideration to present a diagnosis of the crisis of the sector,” remarked Obi.
He outlined key measures that the task force should prioritize, including addressing fire outbreaks that frequently precipitate system collapses, enhancing coordination between the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and distribution companies (DisCos), and enforcing accountability among industry operators to prevent load rejection.
Obi stressed the urgency of these interventions, especially in light of the recent grid collapse on Monday, which plunged the nation into darkness for the second time in a month. This latest incident occurred shortly after the contentious tariff hike for Band A power consumers sanctioned by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The LP stalwart underscored the need for swift action to ameliorate power availability in the short term while simultaneously formulating a comprehensive national electricity policy and implementation strategy.
