PDP’s Damagum Labels Edo Gubernatorial Election as Crucial Democratic Test

Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has declared the forthcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21 as a significant test for Nigeria’s democracy. Addressing supporters at the PDP’s grand finale campaign rally in Benin City, Damagum urged security agencies to uphold professionalism and justice throughout the electoral process.

“From our campaign trains, the people of Edo have accepted our candidate,” Damagum stated. He emphasized that security personnel, funded by taxpayers, must adhere to their core values and ensure fair conduct during the election.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, who chairs the PDP’s National Campaign Council for the Edo election, warned against any attempts to compromise the electoral process and encouraged a high turnout. “Edo is known as the cradle of civilization and intellect that must not settle for anything less,” Fintiri asserted.

Fintiri also lauded Governor Godwin Obaseki for his contributions to human capital development in Edo. Obaseki, in his remarks, characterized the upcoming election as an “existential threat” and highlighted the importance of maintaining the progress achieved under the PDP administration.

Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Muhammed of Bauchi, refuted claims of disunity among PDP governors, affirming their solidarity. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro praised the PDP candidate for his experience and ability to address economic issues.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on voters to safeguard their votes, stating, “Make sure you cast your votes, ensure they are counted, escort your votes to the collation centres, and make sure they are announced.”
