PDP Warns Police Against Undermining Democracy in Rivers State

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Nigerian Police against actions that could derail democracy in Rivers State, particularly in the lead-up to the local government elections scheduled for tomorrow, October 5.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP called on the people of Rivers State to assert their sovereignty by participating in the elections, despite calls for a boycott from some party members in the state. The NWC stressed that the people’s right to democratic participation cannot be infringed upon by any group or individual.

The party emphasized that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is fully prepared for the election and that no court has the authority to stop the polls under the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. Quoting Section 84(15) of the Act, the PDP reminded the public that courts cannot halt the holding of primaries or general elections pending the resolution of a suit.

The NWC condemned alleged attempts by the police to interfere with the election process, including reports of an invasion of RSIEC facilities. The party accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled police of attempting to frustrate the elections and subvert the will of the people.

Ologunagba urged the Inspector General of Police to fulfill his constitutional duty by providing a secure environment for the elections and warned that the APC and the police would be held responsible if there is any breakdown of law and order.
