PDP Urges Benue State Governor to Revise Security Strategy Amid Unrest

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to reassess his approach to handling security issues in the state following recent violent incidents in Ukum Local Government Area. This advisory was delivered in a statement by the party’s publicity secretary, Bemgba Iortyom.

The unrest stemmed from a protest by youths against local banditry in Ayati village, which escalated into the destruction of personal and government properties. In response, Governor Alia imposed a 24-hour curfew on the local government area.

While expressing condolences to those affected by the violence, the PDP condemned the destruction of property and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands. “PDP further regrets to know that the events in Zaki Biam in the last couple of days spotlight the degree of insecurity in the state in a manner as should necessitate a change of approach from Governor Hyacinth Alia in his handling of security in the state,” the statement read.

The party highlighted the lack of a timely security response, which allowed mobs to cause significant damage, including the destruction of the Local Government Council Secretariat, the Chairman’s Lodge, and other public and private properties.

The PDP urged the governor to prioritize a rapid response mechanism to improve security in the state. It suggested enhancing the logistics and communication capabilities of security agencies, initiating a disarmament and resettlement program for bandits in the Sankera area, and mobilizing the people of Benue across political, religious, and social lines to collectively tackle insecurity.
