PDP Leadership Crisis Deepens as Ahmed Mohammed Accepts Role Amid Internal Struggles

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to grapple with a deepening leadership crisis, as factional Acting National Chairman Ahmed Mohammed officially accepted his role. In a letter dated October 13, 2024, shared by suspended National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, Mohammed expressed appreciation for the support received and urged for reflection on the party’s direction and effectiveness as a robust opposition.

“The domestic events within our Party in the last few days call for deep reflection about the management of the PDP, especially at this crucial time in our nation,” he stated, emphasizing the need for equity, fairness, and justice in line with the party’s founding principles. Mohammed admitted that internal conflicts have undermined the PDP’s ability to serve as a strong opposition, saying, “Regrettably, we must admit that we have not satisfactorily carried out the critical role expected of a virile opposition in a democracy.”

He committed to adhering to the PDP Constitution and restoring member confidence, starting with the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for October 24, 2024. Mohammed also called on the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement for former National Chairman Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

The leadership turmoil is further complicated by a court ruling preventing the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) from ousting Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, adding another layer to the ongoing internal conflict.
