PDP Demands Independent Probe into Budget Padding, Calls for Senate President’s Resignation

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an independent investigation into the alleged insertion of N3.7 trillion into the 2024 budget for non-existent projects. The party also demanded that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, step aside immediately to ensure a fair investigation.

Speaking in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in government. He called for Senator Akpabio to report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his pending case of alleged looting of N108 billion belonging to the people of Akwa Ibom State during his tenure as Governor.

Ologunagba also urged the Senate President to address the reported N86 billion contract scam in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) during his time as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.

The PDP condemned the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the Senate, describing it as an attempt to suppress investigation and conceal facts. Ologunagba questioned why the APC Senate leadership did not refer the matter to the appropriate Senate Standing Committee for an open investigation.

Highlighting the seriousness of the allegations, Ologunagba stressed the need for Akpabio to step aside to prevent further damage to the institution of the Senate. He expressed solidarity with Senator Ningi for his courage in seeking probity and accountability.
