PDP Blames Leadership Crisis for Nonparticipation in Ebonyi Local Government Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi has expressed disappointment over its nonparticipation in the recent local government elections, attributing the issue to ongoing leadership crises within the party. The elections took place across the 171 wards in the state’s 13 councils.

Steve Oruruo, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Ebonyi, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki, highlighting the party’s unhappiness with the situation. He assured that efforts were underway to revitalize the party in the state and urged members to unite.

“Actually, we are not happy for not fielding a candidate. Of course, you must build your house first before you will be able to nominate candidates for elections,” Oruruo stated. He emphasized the importance of party unity and strength for a better Ebonyi and Nigeria.

The major opposition parties in Ebonyi, including the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party, and PDP, did not field candidates for the elections. Political analyst Dr. James Igwe criticized the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for not providing a level playing field for all parties. He called on EBSIEC to support democratic development and ensure fair elections.

Efforts to reach EBSIEC Chairman Jossy Eze for comments were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off.
