Pakistan secured a 31-run victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring encounter at the Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah, with spinners dominating both sides.
After being bowled out for 116, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Sadia Iqbal (3-17), restricted Sri Lanka to 85-9 in their 20 overs. Sri Lanka’s chase faltered early, with star batter Chamari Athapaththu dismissed for just six, leaving the team struggling at 35-3. Despite resistance from Nilakshi de Silva (22) and Vishmi Gunaratne (20), Sri Lanka failed to recover.
Pakistan’s Fatima Sana, who top-scored with 30 off 20 balls, also took the crucial wicket of Athapaththu, cementing her side’s win. The spin-friendly conditions saw seven Sri Lankan wickets fall to spin, with Athapaththu also impressing with 3-18 in her team’s bowling effort.
Both teams now face tougher tests, with Sri Lanka taking on defending champions Australia, and Pakistan meeting rivals India in their next fixtures.
