Pablo Castrillo Triumphs in Emotional Stage 12 of Vuelta a España

Pablo Castrillo secured the biggest victory of his career with a remarkable summit finish on stage 12 of the Vuelta a España, edging out Britain’s Max Poole by eight seconds on the challenging ascent to Montaña de Manzaneda. The 23-year-old rider from Equipo Kern Pharma, making his Grand Tour debut, led by half a minute heading into the final kilometre and managed to hold off 21-year-old Poole to claim the win.

UAE Team Emirates’ Marc Soler completed the stage podium, finishing third.

Australian rider Ben O’Connor maintained his overall lead in the general classification, with a margin of three minutes and 16 seconds over Slovenia’s Primož Roglič.

Castrillo’s victory was particularly poignant as it came on the day his team’s former president, Manolo Azcona, passed away. An emotional Castrillo dedicated his win to his team and staff, saying, “It’s unbelievable. It’s for the team, and it’s for the staff. I was very nervous for the final, but I decided to attack in the flat and take victory.”
