Oyo APC Warns Gov. Makinde Against Land Seizure Plan

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has issued a stern warning to Governor Seyi Makinde regarding his alleged plan to seize privately owned land in Ibadan. The party claims that the governor’s proposal to create 500-meter setbacks for the ongoing Circular Road project could lead to the forced acquisition of over 24,700 acres of land, potentially rendering more than 100,000 families homeless.

In a statement released by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the Oyo APC questioned the justification for the governor’s actions, labeling them as a deliberate attempt to “forcefully hijack” land from citizens. The project, which spans six local government areas in Ibadan, has sparked controversy, with many landlords reportedly seeing their properties marked for demolition.

The APC criticized the governor for allegedly altering the original development plans for the Circular Road, a project initiated by his predecessors, and for prioritizing land acquisition over public welfare. The party also expressed concerns about the transparency of the project, noting that the government has not provided clear details on the specific developments planned for the seized land.

The party further accused the state government of a pattern of land appropriation, citing the alleged sale of properties such as the BCOS Staff Quarters, ARCEDEM Estates, and parts of Agodi Gardens. The APC called on Governor Makinde to halt any plans to take over land and properties owned by citizens, urging him to consider the impact on those who stand to lose their homes and livelihoods.
