The Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in Osun State has urged the Federal Government not to withhold monthly allocations due to the local government areas in the state. This appeal was made during a meeting held on Tuesday in Osogbo at the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) office.
The Chairman of Osun IPAC, Mr. Victor Akande, read a communiqué after a stakeholders’ meeting with political parties, emphasizing that OSSIEC was already in the process of conducting local government elections. Akande, accompanied by leaders from 16 political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed their collective support for OSSIEC.
Akande said, “We are telling the Federal Government that there is no need to withhold the allocation of local government areas in Osun because OSSIEC has started the process of conducting elections since January.”
He further highlighted that the electoral process in the state adhered to legal requirements, stating that election notices were issued in accordance with the law, which requires a 360-day notice period before the election. As such, the IPAC insisted that the state’s ongoing election preparations should not be grounds for withholding local government allocations.
Regarding the parties’ commitment to a peaceful election, Akande assured that all political parties had agreed to support OSSIEC in ensuring a credible and transparent election in 2025. He added, “We trust the commission to conduct a free and fair election. There will be a peaceful campaign, and all parties have agreed to maintain peace and promote OSSIEC’s campaign against cybercrime, drug abuse, and cultism.”
The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in OSSIEC, reinforcing the parties’ commitment to a smooth and peaceful election process.
