Orji Kalu Reiterates Support for Single Six-Year Term for Presidents, Governors

Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has once again advocated for a single six-year term for presidents and state governors, arguing that the current two-term system is costly and hinders effective governance. Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, expressed this view during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

According to Kalu, the focus on re-election distracts elected officials from governance, with many prioritizing their political future over public service. He noted, “When you become a governor or a president, their eyes are on re-election… The only way to solve this problem is by giving no incentive to anybody, doing one term of six years.” He believes this approach would enhance performance and reduce the temptation to accumulate wealth for future campaigns.

In addition to his views on governance, Kalu addressed concerns about the emoluments of senators, dismissing the perception that they receive excessive remuneration. He explained that the N14 million he receives monthly covers all expenses, including staff salaries and constituency office maintenance. “I earn N14 million monthly and it covers everything… It is not enough,” Kalu remarked, highlighting the financial demands senators face in their constituencies.

Kalu also defended the All Progressives Congress (APC) under President Bola Tinubu, stating that while the party has performed well in certain areas, it faces challenges in addressing the economic hardship affecting Nigerians. He emphasized that President Tinubu is aware of the country’s struggles, describing him as a leader in touch with the realities on the ground.

Lastly, Kalu refuted rumors of a rift between him and President Tinubu and denied any plans to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
