Onyeka Onwenu Laid to Rest in Quiet Lagos Ceremony

The late music icon Onyeka Onwenu was quietly buried yesterday in Lagos, fulfilling her wish for a private and low-key funeral. Onwenu, who passed away suddenly on July 30 after collapsing at the 80th birthday celebration of Dr. Stella Okoli, had expressed her desire for a simple farewell, asking that her burial be quick, quiet, and private.

Her funeral service took place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi. The service was attended by close family and friends, including Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, among other dignitaries.

Onwenu, born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, was a celebrated musician, broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. She began her music career in 1981 and became famous for her distinctive voice and impactful lyrics, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the Nigerian music industry.
