Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has announced his bid to contest the upcoming governorship election slated for November 2024. Addressing concerns over alleged rifts with the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa clarified that any perceived crisis was instigated by a few individuals driven by personal ambitions.
Assuming office in December 2023 following Akeredolu’s demise after a prolonged illness and subsequent burial in Owo, his hometown, Aiyedatiwa aims to secure victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary scheduled for April this year.
Speaking on TVC News, Aiyedatiwa asserted his readiness to run for another term, emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling his constitutional mandate beyond a mere one-year stint. He stated, “Definitely, I will be running because I am already a sitting governor, and let me say this nobody wants to be governor for one year. Give me what the constitution allows me to do, at least let me have a chance also running for one more term as it were.”
Dispelling rumors of discord with his predecessor, Aiyedatiwa affirmed, “Let me put this straight for the record sake, I never had issues with the former principal, there was no time we had a face-off, there was no time we had an issue that will demand that I have to make up with him.” He attributed the purported conflicts to political maneuvering and misinformation fueled by impending elections and Akeredolu’s health challenges.
Responding to an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu by five House of Representatives members from the state, Aiyedatiwa dismissed their grievances as rooted in personal ambitions. He noted, “One of them is an aspirant, what do you expect from an aspirant? He wants to say something to de-market somebody who has a great advantage; one other one is a director general of a campaign to an aspirant.”
In conclusion, Aiyedatiwa affirmed the APC’s unity in the state, stating, “The party has responded that there was no crisis in the party that they are not at loggerheads with me.” As he gears up for the governorship primary and the subsequent election, Aiyedatiwa remains focused on advancing the interests of Ondo State and its people.
