Ogun Waste Authority Shuts Down Two Chinese Companies Over Waste Management Violations

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has shut down two Chinese companies, Yibao Industrial Limited and Ronchang Industrial Park, due to severe violations of waste management regulations. Yibao Industrial Limited, located in Bara village along the Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway, and Ronchang Industrial Park, situated opposite Julius Berger yard along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, were both found operating in unsanitary conditions and failing to properly manage their waste.

OGWAMA’s Special Adviser and Managing Director, Honorable Abayomi Hunye, led the enforcement team that executed the shutdowns. He stated that despite multiple warnings and inspections, both companies failed to clean their environments and continued to use unaccredited waste collectors, contravening Section 17 of the Ogun State Waste Management Law 2020.

The unaccredited collectors, operating at irregular hours, were also found guilty of illegally dumping waste along major expressways, exacerbating the pollution problem. Hunye emphasized that the decision to shut down the companies was made to ensure compliance with waste management standards and protect public health.

Hunye criticized the companies for their disregard for environmental regulations, stating, “Their behavior and actions demonstrate gross disrespect for constituted authority, particularly from foreign-owned entities that would not engage in such practices in their home countries.”

He urged other companies in Ogun State, regardless of ownership, to adhere to the state’s waste management laws or face similar sanctions. Hunye also called on Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to assist OGWAMA in identifying and reporting violators to further improve the state’s environmental conditions.
