Ogun NMA Suspends 25-Day Strike, Urges Government to Address Demands

The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its 25-day strike, which had severely impacted medical services across state-owned healthcare facilities. The suspension was announced on Friday following an emergency general meeting held from August 27 to August 29, 2024, in Abeokuta.

Dr. Ogunjimi Luqman, the State NMA Chairman, explained that the decision to suspend the strike was made to facilitate peaceful dialogue with the state government. The strike was initially triggered by the government’s failure to implement the reviewed Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), a wage structure that has been in effect for federal medical workers since June 2023.

Dr. Luqman noted that the strike had caused significant hardship for the public, leading the association to opt for a temporary cessation to allow for meaningful negotiations. He emphasized that the suspension would last for four weeks, with doctors expected to resume work at 8:00 am on Monday, September 2, 2024.

The NMA has given the state government until September 30, 2024, to address their demands. Dr. Luqman warned that the strike could resume if the issues remain unresolved, stressing that the association’s advocacy is not just for wage adjustments but for the overall welfare of its members. He urged the government to demonstrate sincerity and commitment in resolving the longstanding issues to avoid further industrial disharmony.
