Obasanjo Criticizes Lack of Policy Implementation in Nigeria

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his disappointment over Nigeria’s slow progress, stating that the country is not where it should be in terms of growth and development. Speaking at the 8th Brigadier General Michael Agu (retired) annual distinguished lecture and awards ceremony in Abuja, Obasanjo lamented that despite the numerous policies created by Nigerian leaders, the lack of proper implementation remains a major setback.

“We are not short of policies in Nigeria. Unfortunately, Nigeria has become a burial ground of policies that are either unimplemented or unexecuted,” Obasanjo said. He emphasized that true progress is made through action, not just by wishing for it, adding that Nigeria continues to take “two steps forward and three steps backward.”

Highlighting the need for a more focused approach, he said, “Let us carry the ones we can carry, we cannot be a jack of all trades and master of none.”

Obasanjo also reflected on his administration’s establishment of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), noting that over 100 Nigerian engineers were sent to China for specialized training. His administration had envisioned a series of satellite launches, with plans for Nigeria to eventually launch its own satellite independently.

In response, NASRDA Director General Dr. Mathew Adepoju announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of four additional satellites for Nigeria, marking a significant development in the country’s space program.

Obasanjo Reveals 25% Hearing Loss, Supports Hearing Aid Donations

In a separate event in Bauchi, Obasanjo disclosed that he is 25% deaf, stating that many individuals are unaware of their hearing issues until diagnosed. The former president made the revelation while donating hearing aids to 2,000 people, as part of a broader effort to provide assistance to 10,000 indigent people across the Northeast.

“There is no issue of stigma because nobody is 100 percent healthy. We all have one form of ailment or the other,” Obasanjo said, encouraging others to seek help for their hearing difficulties.
