Oba of Benin Honors Rema with Royal Plaque Ahead of Homecoming Concert

Afrobeats megastar Rema has received a royal plaque from the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, during a visit to the palace on Thursday. The honor was bestowed on the singer ahead of his highly anticipated homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.

Rema, born Divine Ikubor, has been a strong ambassador for Edo State, celebrating the legacy of the ancient Benin empire through his music. His latest hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, is a tribute to his hometown. In the song, Rema mentioned that he deserved a medal from the Oba for his efforts in promoting the kingdom.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Rema joined Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for the groundbreaking ceremony of Edo Arena. The governor announced that the 6,000-capacity arena would be named “Rema Dome” in honor of the singer, recognizing his contributions to the state’s cultural prominence.
