As the crisis over the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) intensifies, a northern group has thrown its support behind Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), rejecting overtures from the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
The Arewa PDP Transparency Group, just days before the crucial meeting of the party’s national executive council (NEC), expressed its preference for Wike to lead the party, citing his capacity to rejuvenate the PDP’s fortunes.
In a statement by Hon. Haruna Bature, the national chairman of the Arewa PDP Transparency Group, leadership was defined as care, concern, and responsibility, qualities they believe Wike embodies. Bature lamented the series of leadership crises within the PDP and emphasized the importance of selecting a leader who can prioritize the party’s interests and the aspirations of Nigerians.
The group dismissed concerns raised by some PDP leaders regarding Wike’s appointment in an APC government, attributing such fears to jealousy, bitterness, and a failure to recognize political realities. They argued that Wike’s leadership could bring about positive change, pointing to the PDP’s continued success in winning gubernatorial and other elections across the nation despite challenges at the national level.
Highlighting Wike’s track record and leadership qualities, the Arewa PDP Transparency Group urged the party’s leadership to prioritize unity and effective governance in their decision-making process.
