NNPP Faces Internal Strife as Kwankwaso and Aniebonam Clash Over Party Leadership

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is grappling with a significant internal crisis as factions led by former Governor Musa Kwankwaso and party founder Dr. Boniface Aniebonam vie for control. This power struggle follows the party’s notable performance in the 2023 elections, where it achieved unprecedented victories.

Kwankwaso’s entrance into the party marked a turning point, as the NNPP secured fourth place in the presidential race, defeated the ruling APC in Kano, and won several legislative and assembly seats. However, tensions have escalated between Kwankwaso’s supporters and Aniebonam’s camp.

The conflict intensified after Professor Rufai Alkali’s departure, leading to a split in the party’s leadership. Kwankwaso’s faction, led by Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, and Aniebonam’s faction, led by Dr. Agbo Major, both claim legitimacy and have expelled or suspended members of the opposing side. Each faction is also armed with court orders barring the other from presenting itself as the legitimate party leadership.

A key point of contention has been the recent change in the party’s logo and constitution. On July 12, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) approved these changes under Kwankwaso’s faction, which Aniebonam condemns as illegal and a violation of court orders. Aniebonam argues that the alterations, including the new logo and constitution, are null and void as he retains the party’s registration certificate.

Kwankwaso’s camp, represented by National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, refutes Aniebonam’s claims. Johnson insists that INEC acted correctly and that Aniebonam’s allegations are baseless. He argues that the party’s constitution allows for the expulsion of members who do not adhere to its rules, citing legal precedents from other parties.

INEC has defended its actions, stating that the changes to the party’s logo followed due process. Chief Press Secretary Rotimi Oyekanmi emphasized that the commission is not involved in fueling the party’s internal disputes and hopes for a swift resolution.

In an effort to mediate, the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), led by Chairman Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, has offered to intervene in the dispute. Dantalle believes that resolving the internal conflict is feasible and is part of IPAC’s mandate.
