Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced on Friday night that it has accepted President Bola Tinubu’s proposal for a new minimum wage of N70,000. This decision, the NLC stated, was made in a spirit of solidarity with Nigerian citizens.
The announcement came at the end of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, with the statement signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero. The NLC emphasized its ongoing commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers.
President Tinubu had approved the new minimum wage on Thursday, following a meeting with the leadership of the Organized Labour in Abuja. This decision comes after the previous minimum wage of N30,000 expired on April 18, 2024. The new wage is pending approval by the National Assembly.
In the statement, Ajaero explained, “NEC-in-session concluded that this decision, though challenging and far from our initial demand, was made in the spirit of solidarity and sacrifice for Nigerian masses to avert a threatened further hike in the price of petrol which would inflict more hardship on the already suffering masses.”
He reiterated the NLC’s dedication to its mission, stating, “Once again, NEC-in-session restates the commitment of the NLC to continue to stand resolutely in its mission to defend and advance the rights of Nigerian workers and Nigerian people at all times.”
Ajaero also called on all Nigerians to unite in this cause and hold their leaders accountable, emphasizing the importance of shared sacrifice and service.
