The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has clarified that the new national identity card is a single, multipurpose card, consolidating various functionalities into one, eliminating the need for multiple cards. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, provided insights into the features of the proposed General Multipurpose National Identity Card (GMPC) in a recent communication.
The commission’s collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System culminated in the development of the new card, which integrates payment functionality for a wide range of social and financial services.
Adegoke emphasized that the GMPC serves multiple purposes, including payments/financial transactions, access to government services, and travel facilitation, streamlining the user experience and enhancing convenience.
To obtain the GMPC, applicants need to request it with their National Identification Number (NIN) through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks. The issuance process will adhere to existing protocols for debit and credit card issuance, with card collection available at designated centers or through delivery to the applicant’s preferred location, albeit at an additional cost.
NIMC highlighted the GMPC’s compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, positioning it as the default national identity card for Nigeria. The card aims to facilitate access to government intervention programs, particularly for individuals who are financially excluded from social and financial services.
