The Defence Headquarters has expressed concern over the alarming increase in kidnappings across the country, asserting that it has overshadowed the commendable efforts of the troops against terrorists in the Northern region. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, disclosed that within the last week alone, troops have achieved significant success in combating terrorism.
In a statement released on Friday, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward highlighted the urgency of addressing the rising trend of kidnappings, acknowledging the need for an immediate turnaround to ensure the safety of citizens. He emphasized the military’s commitment to actively working towards establishing peace and security across the country.
The statement revealed that troops, in the course of the week, neutralized 185 terrorists and apprehended 212 others. Additionally, 44 individuals involved in oil theft were arrested, and 71 kidnapped citizens were successfully rescued. Notably, troops thwarted oil theft attempts in the South-South region, preventing the loss of an estimated sum of N1,065,885,050.00.
Highlighting the broader efforts to ensure national security, the statement outlined the recovery of 224 assorted weapons and 2,337 assorted ammunition by the troops.
“The military recognises the urgency for an immediate turnaround of the situation and is therefore actively working for peace and security across the country. It is worthy of mention to state that, achieving enduring peace in the country, requires that there is a change in the conditions that make the terrorist, insurgents, and their cohorts willing to fight and carry dastardly acts on fellow citizens,” Maj. Gen. Buba Edward emphasized.
Despite the remarkable achievements of the troops in combating terrorism, the Defense Headquarters urges the nation to remain vigilant against the growing threat of kidnappings, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes and ensure lasting peace.
