Amid the scorching heatwave sweeping through parts of Nigeria, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has issued vital health safety guidelines to safeguard individuals from the adverse effects of soaring temperatures.
In a message posted via its official handle, the association emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and prioritizing self-care during extreme heat conditions. The advisory, titled ‘Stay safe in the heatwave,’ underscored the potential health risks posed by the intense temperatures, including the risk of illness and even death.
To mitigate these risks, the association provided the following essential tips:
1. Stay hydrated: Drink ample water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol, as they can exacerbate dehydration.
2. Wear appropriate clothing: Opt for loose, lightweight, and light-colored garments to facilitate better heat dissipation and keep the body cool.
3. Seek shade: Minimize outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When outdoors, seek shade whenever possible to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
4. Take cool showers or baths: Utilize cool showers or baths to lower body temperature and alleviate discomfort caused by the heat.
5. Recognize heat-related symptoms: Be mindful of signs such as dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, and confusion, which may indicate heat-related illnesses. Seek prompt medical attention if experiencing any of these symptoms or observing them in others.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has reiterated the persistence of excessive heat across the country in its recent weather update. With temperatures soaring as high as 41°C in the North and 39°C in the South, NiMET cautioned about potential health implications, including fainting, heat-related illnesses, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.
NiMET advised citizens to adopt measures such as adequate fluid intake, seeking shade, using fans, and wearing breathable clothing to mitigate the adverse effects of high temperatures.
In light of these warnings and recommendations, individuals must remain vigilant, prioritize their health, and adhere to the prescribed safety guidelines to navigate through the ongoing heatwave safely.
