Nigerian Army Chief Affirms Commitment to Democracy Amid Coup Allegations

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has vehemently denied any intention within the military to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system, amidst swirling coup allegations.

Speaking during a seminar for Nigerian Army officers in Abuja, Lagbaja reiterated the military’s dedication to upholding the constitution and pledged to fulfill their mandates within its bounds.

He emphasized, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Army, has come to terms with the country’s choice of democracy as the preferred system of governance. We are therefore agents of democracy and have no desire to truncate it.”

Lagbaja reassured the public that the Nigerian Army remains committed to defending the constitution and asserted that the military’s duty is to complement elected leaders while remaining professional and constitutionally bound in their actions.

Addressing recent coup allegations, Lagbaja’s statement echoed the Defence Headquarters’ dismissal of claims regarding heightened alert within the Presidential Guards Brigade, which sparked fears of a coup plot. The Defence Headquarters clarified that such allegations were baseless and reiterated the Brigade’s standard operational procedures in safeguarding the seat of power and the Federal Capital Territory.
