The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) asserted on Wednesday that a significant portion of reported kidnapping cases in the country are fabricated or orchestrated.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, made this assertion during the presentation of a gold medal at the 14th edition of the Biennial Police Games, themed “Oluyole 2024,” held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Adejobi contended that the security situation in Nigeria is not as dire as portrayed, emphasizing that social media often amplifies and recycles outdated or misleading information as current events.
He stated, “Most kidnapping incidents are fake or stage-managed. When people shout that they are being kidnapped, it is not all these incidents are real.”
According to Adejobi, many individuals fabricate kidnapping scenarios to extort money from relatives or extract ransom payments. He urged Nigerians to scrutinize security situations based on verified data rather than speculative or sensationalized reports.
The NPF Director of Sports, CP Patric Athairu, highlighted the importance of the Police Games in uncovering new talents and fostering athletic development. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the police force and sports federations to support emerging talents.
Zone two emerged as the leading region in the medal standings, securing 17 gold medals and over 35 medals, followed closely by the Force Headquarters with 15 gold medals and 34 medals.
