Nigeria Customs Service CG: Only President Tinubu Can Decide Border Reopening

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, asserted that only President Bola Tinubu holds the authority to reopen the country’s borders. Speaking during an interaction session with members of the Kongolam border community in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State, Adeniyi addressed concerns and agitations for the reopening of the borders, assuring that consultations and engagements were ongoing regarding the matter.

He emphasized that once consultations are concluded, a decision will be made on the issue. Adeniyi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to facilitating free trade, aligning with the current administration’s agenda of fostering economic prosperity. He highlighted proactive measures taken to reduce checkpoints along the border posts and promote synergy between Service personnel and traders.

Addressing the concerns of border communities, Adeniyi assured that the Service operates within the confines of the law and delegated powers. He mentioned that concerns and complaints from residents have been communicated to the President, who directed the release of confiscated food items for sale only in Nigerian markets.

Adeniyi also disclosed collaboration with the Police and sister agencies to address obstacles hindering free trade in border areas. He emphasized the importance of keeping food produced in Nigeria within the country, especially during a period of national food insufficiency, stressing the collective effort required to enforce laws prohibiting food item exportation at this time.
