Nigeria and South Africa Dominate Netflix Viewership in Africa for 2023

The intense rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa has extended to the Netflix streaming platform, with both countries dominating the list of the most-watched movies and series in Africa for 2023.

According to a Netflix Engagement Report detailing viewership from January to December 2023, Nigerian and South African productions filled all 13 spots on the list of top films and series. Nigerian films and series secured six places, while South African productions took seven.

The Nigerian movie “The Black Book,” starring Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) and Sam Dede, emerged as the most-watched film in Africa, with 28.3 million views. This Anakle-produced film, released in September 2023, topped the list.

Following closely, the South African series “Fatal Seduction” and “Unseen” ranked second and third with 18.3 million and 18 million views, respectively. “Fatal Seduction” was released in July 2023, while “Unseen” came out in March 2023.

In the fourth place is the South African film “Number Number” with 10 million views, followed by the Nigerian movie “Blood Vessel” with 8.9 million views in fifth place. The Nigerian series “Shanty Town” occupies the sixth spot with 8.2 million views.

Other notable mentions include the Nigerian film “A Sunday Affair” at number seven with 7 million views. The South African movie “Silverton Siege” and the Nigerian movie “Jagun Jagun” are in the eighth and ninth positions, with 6.7 million and 4.9 million views, respectively.
