Following the sentencing of former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison for rape, Neymar has come under fire for his purported involvement in the case, which has been branded “absurd” by critics.
Alves, aged 40, received the sentence after being found guilty of raping a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022. The severity of the sentence has sparked controversy, with Brazilian Minister for Women Cida Goncalves denouncing it as “soft” for such a grave offense.
In a further twist to the story, Gleisi Hoffman, President of the Worker’s Party and a representative, has directed criticism towards Neymar, alleging that the football star provided €150,000 (£129,000/$164,000) in damages that Alves was required to pay to the victim.
Hoffman expressed her dismay, stating, “The conviction of the rapist Daniel Alves is pedagogical and exemplary, it shows that society no longer tolerates sexist and misogynistic behavior. The absurd thing was that he borrowed money from Neymar, paid the compensation and reduced the sentence, something that does not solve anything for the victim, it does not erase their suffering.”
This revelation casts a shadow over Neymar’s involvement in the case and has prompted scrutiny of the ethical implications of his actions.
The sentencing of Alves, who enjoyed a celebrated career playing for prestigious clubs such as Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Sevilla, has undoubtedly tarnished his legacy. Despite his accomplishments on the field, this grave charge will forever alter how he is remembered in the annals of football history.
